Depression Depression Basics

Symptoms of depression typical in adults may not predominate in children.

When adults are depressed they predominantly experience sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, and changes in appetite and sleep. Once thought not to exist in children, recognizing depression may take a keener eye. In children, particularly younger, less verbal children, irritability is often a key symptom. Loss of interest in activities that once brought pleasure, decline in grades, and staying alone in one’s room may be additional red flags.
