Heartburn Heartburn Basics

Going to bed can worsen heartburn

Lying down and infrequent swallowing during sleep can sometimes cause acid to leak upwards to the esophagus causing nighttime heartburn. Dietary restrictions, lifestyle changes, elevating the head of the bed, and drug therapies can help alleviate episodes of heartburn. Fast-acting antacids can be combined with longer-lasting acid blockers to provide quick, extended relief of periodic episodes of nighttime heartburn.
