DR. NANCY SYNDERMAN: Hello, I’m Dr. Nancy Snyderman with this week’s Healthful Hint.

We’ve heard a lot lately about the healing herbs. But what about a soothing spice? Yes, your spice rack can double as a natural medicine cabinet when it comes to many common ailments.

Got a toothache? Place a whole clove between your cheek and the tooth. That should help deaden the pain until you get to the dentist.

And cinnamon is good for a lot more than making delicious buns. A tea made by steeping one tablespoon of powdered cinnamon in one cup of hot water may help combat diarrhea. And a sprinkle of cinnamon on your toast or oatmeal can reduce painful gas.

Looking for a more exotic way than mouthwash to curb bad breath? Follow the lead of many eastern cultures and try nibbling on some cardamom or anise seeds.

Then there’s red pepper; you know it can add heat to your salsa, but it can do the same for chilly fingers and toes. Mix one tablespoon of ground red pepper with one tablespoon of cornstarch and then sprinkle it in your gloves or socks.

Now that’s what you call the spice of life. With Healthful Hints, I’m Dr. Nancy Snyderman
