Dr. Nancy Snyderman: Hello, I’m Dr. Nancy Snyderman with this week’s “Healthful Hint”. Just because you’re pregnant, doesn’t mean you have to give up exercise, and even if you’ve never been much of an athlete, experts now say exercise is a good idea for most mothers to be. Benefits include improved circulation and muscle tone, which makes it easier to carry the extra weight of pregnancy. Exercise also increases endurance, a big help during a long labor.

Pregnant women who are not used to working out should start slowly so try walking or daily stretching. More athletic women can enjoy a harder workout like jogging or aerobics. Three times a week for no more than thirty minutes is the recommended regimen. When working out, remember to drink lots of water and stick to low impact activity. Of course contact your doctor before starting any fitness program. Exercising while pregnant will not only improve your health, it just may help the health of the little one on the way.

With “Healthful Hints”, I’m Dr. Nancy Snyderman.
